Hey guys im looking to breed convicts for my oscar

What do you recommend in terms of tank, filter, substrate, heater, ect.

i am completely new to this and my oscar needs to eat

25 gal pea gravel any hob small stealth

29-40Gallon, Decent flowrate canister/hob, regular heater, sand as substrate, handful of decently sized smooth rocks on steep'ish angles.

Seriously though, if your Oscar needs to eat, feed him a good varied diet of quality pellets, feeders are rubbish.

Oh, and before someone else chimes in "Just add water" re: convicts and breeding, You'll need water in your tank.

I would actually suggest livebearers, like platies, for food. Convicts are rather bony little fish and might get stuck in your Oscars throat. Plus, platies are easy to breed... and probably easier to see since they come in brighter colors.
Just a suggestion.

convicts are rabbits of the water world.
they breed once every 15 days.
i had 3 spawns in just a month.
i never had problem feeding convicts to my fish.

Feed them young enough, shouldn't be a problem, right?

Yep. Avoid feeding them over 1". Any bigger and thier dorsal spines will only increase in size which poses bigger threats to your oscar when he eats them.

I also agree with japes that feeding foods other then feeders is a better idea, we can't stop you from feeding convicts.

your going to need to have about 5 breeding groups to have a stable supply of feeders. Breeding your own feeders isnt very effective unless doing it on a large scale but then thats just a waste of money to raise up the fry to feed. I just go out every week and catch feeders Qt for a week or two then feed.

All you need is a puddle that's around 79-82 degrees, and a mature pair, lol!

It's not that hard. As long as their in at least 30 gallons, temp around 80, and if they have a pot or something to breed in, give it a few weeks. I've used regular sized gravel, and sand. They aren't partial. If you put a male and female together and the temp is right, chances are you'll have babies soon.
