how long can the fry live with the parent before they have to be moved?
how long does it take the fry to reach ate-able size?
can they really kill your fish cause of spikey spines?
Do i have to feed the babies? or can they eat leftover food from the parents?
Can the parents live with live plants or will they eat it?
would you breed shrimps or cons if you wanted to feed jags and dovii's?

Thanks Alot!!!

i want to breed some convicts for my peacock bass. what i do know about convicts (a little) there really easy to feed . ive heard people say on mfk that their spines are not a problem because the fish will eat them head first. and you have to feed the babies i think baby brine shrimp woul be the way to go

As soon as the fry hatch, I recommend moving them to their own, totally bare tank with a sponge filter or a very gentle power filter. Once they become free swimming, add some fake plants, but no substrate. You also need to feed them after they fully absorb their yolks. You can feed them a Hikari sinking cichlid gold pellets, they can eat any pellet size, they will nibble on it untill it softens enough.

If you want you can feed hikari first bites but its unnecessary. Brine shrimp are not nutritious enough, the cichlid gold will give excellent growth rates too, once large enough, you can feed them feeder minnows depending how large you want them, this will make them grow very fast but is not recommended.

forget the spikes. fish in the wild wouldn't live very long if they didn't eat fish with spiny dorsal fins. as for which is better for your fish, idk ild just do both and gut load the hell out of them:D

It is my understanding that the spikes take a while to harden. Baby brine shrimp is excellent fry food. When starting little fish on pellets I crush the pellets between two spoons making little pieces small enough for the fish to eat.

You can also feed boiled egg yolk to baby fish that are too small for other commercial foods. I prefer not to feed commercial foods at all to developing fry, since they are comprised of many grainy fillers. Good quality, high protein foods are definitely much better for making good quality feeders.
