i have a breeding pare in a 20 gallon...fry come out soon after the 1/4 inch mark with 40% water change every other to every third day.
I have seen and herd people do it in a 10..but you would have to do huge water changes to keep it clean, i was told 20 was even to small but i seem to be doing fine.they are fat and happy pumping out groups of 150+ fry
my male is about 4 1/2 inches and female is about 3 inches(missing tail).
i've heard of people doing it in a 10 gallon tank, but when then the ammonia levels may be too high. a 20 gallon should be sufficient and is recommended
I have known of poeple successfully breeding cons in 5g HOME DEPOT buckets.........For feeder purposes, I would start off with two 10g tanks and a 20g LONG.....The two 10g should be used for two seperate breeding pairs.......The fish start breeding at around an inch, sometimes smaller........The 20g LONG is used to growout the fry........I have raised a single male from fry to his current size of 4 inches, I hatched him late 2009.......The guy is structured well and grows a large nuchal hump on his forehead.......I plan on sticking him in his own 55g-60g tank to breed and live off his own life......Right now he is in a 125g with some tankbusters that will be big enough to swallow him within a year.........
