is it a bad idea to breed convicts in a comunity tank.iv heard that they like to kill tankmates while they are in breeding mode.all of my other fish are bigger than the cons. what will become of my tank?

Yes. They will defend their territory and fry at all costs. Quite belligerent and best bred in a tank with no other fish in it.

Depends how big your tank is. The Convicts will pick out a spot and defend it like no other. If the fish are fast enough and the tank is large enough with plenty of hiding places, it's not that bad.

Singally, they make a great fish....BUT(very big but) it's not wise to have a breeding pair of convicts in the same tank with your prized specimans....Once that pair has a set territory, and then fry, they will fin nip and chase away anything that crosses their territory....Sometimes a cons territory is the whole tank, so be careful...Paired Cons should have a tank of their own, period....

Cons are great in their own 30-55g tanks....I've seen many 55-60g tanks that were divided into three parts, containing 3 seperate breeding pairs...

i would not reccommend it......i had my cons in my 75 gallon with a EBJD, oscar, and ornate bichir and they took over the tank once they started breeding.......they would not let a single fish onto their half of the tank......removed them and they now have fry in a 30 gallon.......

If you need to do it though, just siphon out the fry after 3-4 days. The parents won't be as aggressive once the fry are gone. But when you do remove the fry the will spawn again quickly, sometimes within 3 weeks.

i agree ......i also found though i loose more fry when i take them out early rather them leave them with the parents.......the fry in with mine right now have been there for 3 and a half weeks and they are doing great.......
