Breeding Convicts

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't know why you started a second thread but a 20 long will be fine for a con breeding project.

Sent from my mind to my fingers to my phone to the MFK servers to you

A 10-20 should be good for awhile but I would eventually step it up to a 30

What the guys are trying to explaine is it's often more diffacult not to breed convects. If you provide these fish with a cycled tank clean water and good food, nature will take it's course. Provide them with a flat stone or piece of slate to lay their egg on is about all you need, even then they may pick their own site for this. Use an aged sponge filter in the tank so the fry don't get sucked into the intake of an HOB, canister etc. They are great fish to get into breeding with. Once they lay their eggs they will guard them in about 72 hours the eggs will hatch and the wigglers will be moved to a hiding place and you may not see them for about 5 days. Once the fry go free swimming the parents will guard the swarm of fry. Feed the fry baby brine shrimp, decapsulated brine shrimp eggs or any other food small enough for them to eat. Later as they grow you could add dapnia, crushed flakes, golden pearls etc. Otherwise it's pretty straight foward. Let the parents raise the fry so they get used to it sometimes it take new parents a couple of trys to get it right but convects are usually pretty good at it right away. GL.

I merged both threads.

One thing most people don't mention, the male will invariably beat the living daylight out of the female, and not always during spawning. After the fry reach a certain age, he become convinced that the female is a threat to his young, and will kill said female. Or he will eat the fry and try and force the female to spawn again, even if she is not ready. this will result in a battered or dead female - unless the tank has at least a 36 inch footprint and has lots and lots and lots of hiding places for her. this has been my experience.
