Hey all, I was just wondering how you would go about breeding zebra danios? I was looking to stock my pond with them next spring. It's Florida, so the water temp shouldn't be too much of a problem, maybe in winter, but I'll see how it goes. Right now I have 3 youngsters and 2 adults. The younger ones I obviously can't sex at the moment, as they are about 3/4 to a inch. The adults, I'm not sure. I bought them both looking relatively plump, but they've slendered down, especially one of them. I'm guessing it was just because they ate a big meal, cause after I just fed them they both look SOMEWHAT fat. Nothing that I would call "swollen with eggs". The one with a slightly larger tummy is picking on the other one. They are in a 5 gallon tank, 2 inched layer of marbles/large pebbles. And a very simple sponge filter that has been cycled for 2 months. I'm starting to think they are both males. Also, I've heard you breed them with one female to two males, is that needed? I'm thinking for a larger spawn yes, but I'm only looking to raise about 20 to adulthood, no more than 30. What do you guys think?

Anyone? I know they're just crappy little 99 cent minnows to most people, but come on, some people love them. :) And yes, I've read up on them, I just want some of your opinions.

The way I breed Danios is to put them in a window screen inside the breeding tank. I buy the big screen at Home Depot, using my hand I push the screen down so it forms a bowl shape. Theyre are so easy to breed that Flake food is all you need to condition them.

Good advice from incendie22.

Pearl, Zebra, and Leopard Danios are prolific and easy breeders. A harder question is how to get them to stop breeding.

I figured that out lol, after having the 2 larger ones for a few days they fattened up considerably. Now I don't know what to do with the 200 eggs I got, maybe feed them to the bass and cichlids?

Didnt you say you wanted to stock your pond with them? Why feed them off then?

Im just curious what you mean with the screen. Could you post a pic so I can see what you did?
