I have a female Burundi and a Male Karilani Frontosa. They are still not quite mature, but close. Is it likely that they will breed when they mature or do they prefer their own subspecies?

i wouldnt mix them..its not the best thing to get hybrids of fronts out there..Cypho keepers arent really fond of mixing two different strains of fronts..

You could use one of them to trade for the mate you need, but I wouldn't let them breed. Got any pics?

I am not too worried about raising a brood, the bottom feeders should take care of that. I was just wondering if I am going to have spawning agression to deal with later on.

I will get some pictures up as soon as the male fills out. he is very thin right now as we just bought him last weekend. Realy nice fish and for the price, I couldnt pass.

That's good to hear, are you able to get a good deal of more of either so it can be of the same kind?

You might see some aggression from the male since he's only got one female to focus on. In response to your question about frontosa breeding, the fronts don't really care about what subspecies they inter breed with. Just remember that it takes a long time for fronts to reach breeding age.

Thanks,

I realize they take quite a while to grow but the male is around 5" and the female 4" so according to the info I have read they should be coming of age sometime this year anyway.

I did read that it is best to keep them 1 male for 3 females when breeding but since this was not my goal anyway I just bought the 2. Are you saying that may be a problem?

The female may get batttered pretty good because there are no others to take attention off of her. Get something for her to hide in, that the male can't get into. That might help.

Most of the front breeders i have met since getting mine usually have around 1-2males/4-8 females in big six foot or 8 foot tanks ,species /subspecies only tanks. The bigger the tank the more you have. What size tank you got ? The other info given to you was all correct IMO.
