Hi guys,

I think I posted this question in the wrong forum last time. However, I will soon empty my 20 gallon tank and am thinking about getting a pair of high grade discus from Stenkden Germany (not sure if i spelt it correctly).

However, I was wanting to do something that could help me finance my next tank. Each Stenkden discuss sells for like $200+ in Australia.

I talked to Discus Han from America (very reknowned discus breeder), he said a 20 gallon would be fine for breeding a pair of discus, however... try to keep it bare bottom so you can easily do water changes, since discuss are VERY sensitive fish.

Any suggestions? I have not breeded fish before, but would like to have a go at breeding some Grade AAA+ discus. Thoughts?

i've heard they are very temperamental fish, but i have no real idea. i just picked up 6 a couple days ago, so i have no true realworld experience with discus yet.

i am keeping mine in a barebottom growout tank for easier maintenance. it has been said that covering parts of the tank help too, like painting the back and/or sides of the tank, supposed to help them give off their color better.

as far as breeding, plant pots or breeding cones work well. the breeder i got mine from uses them so that the discus don't lay the eggs on his heaters or other equipment.

definitely would want some breeder tips, good luck!

You will have much better luck in a 55 gallon. Smaller tanks are actually more difficult to manage parameters, which have to be exact for discus breeding.

hmm i have only one 60 gal..for my oscars... its gonna be a big investment... A grade discus from europe is like $200 minimum for one lol...however there are some lfs here selling pairs for 300...

Either a 20 Gallon or 29 Gallon tank is good for breeding Discus. As far as the quality of the water you already have to do at least a 30% WC everyday if your going to try to breed Discus.

20g will work, I prefer a 29g or a 40 breeder. Bare bottom with a breeding cone or cermic pot with 100% RO water for a higher hatch rate. Daily water changes is not necessary just keep an eye out on your TDS levels. My discus have bred in 1 day old water up to 4 day old water it all comes down to your water paremeters!
You can't go wrong with fish from Stendker but your gonna pay a premium for a pair.
