the number one most important thing in breeding Discus is water quality.
it is best to start with afew discus in a tank so that you can find a Pair
that look like they will breed..once you think you have a pair they should be
put in their own tank.. Hopefully the Feamale will be rather large ,as one of such
can produce more quantity and a healthier quality of fry..Ok now hopefully you found your
pair and have them in their own tank thats has aeration and a mechanical filter
( not to much water motion in the tank ) Take a piece of PVC pipe about 6.5 to 7.5 cm
in diameter and about 30 cm in length put this in the tank vertically or better yet at a 70
degree angel in the corner of the tank so the eggs can attach to it.

it is best to put this where there is very little disturbance in the tank.
you will notice the the Spawner will clean the surfance where it in tends on putting
it's eggs... At this point the brrodstock should be easiley noticable.. The male will
have a smaller, short and sharp breeding tube whereas the female has a bigger and lnoger breeding
tube... The female will begin laying it's eggs in a row on the surface medium after
which the male will fertilize the eggs.. this work of love will be repeated untill
all eggs have been laid , this will take a few hours... the amount of eggs could be any where from
45 to 360 eggs this will depend on the size and age of the female..Any eggs that are
fertilized will be clear in color.. in about one to twn hours you will see some eggs become
opaque and infected with a fungus.. to keep the risk of a fungus attack on the other eggs
i recomend treating the tank with a samll Methyle Blue treatment at about 2ppm you do this in the
breeding tank...

Any eggs that will hatch you will notice the Spawner will suck the eggs up and tranfer them to another place
this task will also aid in breaking the egg shell, eggs hatch anywhere from 45 to 55
hours from fertilization.. The fry will stick to the walls/substrate until they are 3 days old at this point the fry
needs no food as it will be fed by it's yolk sac, the 4th day the fry will start swiming and stick to the spawners
body as it will begin to feed off the mothers and farthers slime coat

When the fry become free swiming about two maby three weeksyou will not need to feed them uptill this point..
they must be removed from the parents tank as it can be hazardous to the health of the parents. because at one point they will
start ripping bits or flesh and sacles off the parents

Start feeding your new babies very small finelychoped bloodworms, newly hatched brine
you could even use the yolk of a hard boiled egg just a small amout put though a fine screen
feed them like 6 or more times a day ,after the last feeding do small water changes
daily.. you be be amazed how fast your lil babies grow in the frist few weeks of being on ther own

ikeep my tank between 81 and 82 degrees
Ph at 6.5
i also use balck water xtract
as discus love that water well i use peat but you must be sure on chem are in it
i hope this helps

It is VERY hard to artificially raise discus fry....unless you are able to devote hours a day to them, then it is best to just let the parents raise the fry. Why do you want to artificially raise anyways??

The only reason breeders wanna artificially raise frys is because some times the parents eat the frys.

Most breeders that I know who artificially raise the fry do it soley to get the numbers...to produce in mass production. A lot of pairs who eat the fry do so due to stress of some sort, which can be fixed, or due to inexperience which will come with time.
