So lately I have been thinking about breeding african fat tail geckos since I dont have nearly enough room in my bedroom to really kick off breeding ball pythons like I had originally planned :/. From the information I have gathered, fat tails are pretty much the exact same as leos care wise. Is there any additional quirks these geckos have compared to leos? Does anyone on here have or had a breeding colony of leos or fat tails? What advice would you give to a new guy? Were you able to sell all the babies fairly easy or did you end up having to let them go at losses or just keep them? Thanks in advance for the info guys.

It's been years since I kept and bred AFT's but their care is basically identical to Leopard Geckos other than the fact that they like more humidity.

How many breeder geckos are you planning on having? I can tell you this, females can easily lay 5-6 pairs of eggs a season and if they all hatch that's 10-12 geckos that you have to find homes for. AFT usually sell for a little more than common leopard gecko morphs but....the demand for AFT's is definitely not as great as it is for leopards. This is the reason why I ended up getting rid of all my ATF to focus on Leopards. Now I think the market is too saturated with leopards and that's why I've pretty much given up on breeding those as well. I'm not trying to discourage you, but it can be hard to get rid of offspring. I would ask around at some of your local pet stores and see if they would be interested in buying some off.

Alright, I was figuring I'd start small, like getting 1 male and 3 females so I'd have a little colony. But yah I can see how that would explode pretty quick. I am friends with an owner of a reptile shop so I guess I should ask him if he'd be interested in buying the geckos off of me, not really something I would want to assume and end up getting stuck with a ton of geckos. Any interesting morphs that are affordable these days? I was thinking of picking up a couple albino hets or amelanestic hets. I like the normals with stripes as well. Any real rules of thumb that cant really be covered by a care sheet?

I never bred them but I did get them very cheap while young and pair them up as breeder packages and sold them to not too long ago.. The albino ones.

In my experience it was definitely a lot more frustrating than it should be.
The demand for these animals aren't that great indeed, at least up here.
I also never liked dealing with crickets because they're bs, and my AFT only ate those.

from what i have seen they'll readily take mealworms or roaches instead of crickets which is what i'll try and do. I had a cricket colony for awhile and i hated it...most disgusting thing ever....
