hey guys..just wanted to ask some info on breeding feeder fish..I have a 5" rtc with a diet consisting of freeze dried shrimp, sinking pellets, and superworms..i plan to ocassionally feed him feeder fish for him to hone his hunting skills so he does not get bored and also i would love to see him hunt!!:naughty: i plan to feed him feeder fish rarely for him not to have any nutrition deficiency.. so what kind of feeder fish would be ideal and what is the minimum tanks size to breed them..also i would like to keep the feeder fish happy before they die so what kind of substrate, plants, decorations,(if needed) would make them happy and what kind of filter??

IMO, the cheapest & easiest breeding tank is a 10g Sterilite storage bin from Walmart with a decent HOB filter. For fish, I think Mollies are the easiest to breed, especially if you run extra salt in their breeding tank. Platies & swordtails will also work, but Mollies like algae & veggies, so gut-loading them with nutrients is much easier.

EDIT: Forgot, put a sponge pre-filter on that HOB or just run air-powered sponge filters so you dont suck up all the fry.

My feeder tank is a 20g with fake plants, stream gravel, sponge filter and a murderous ball of java moss. Java moss looks great in a feeder tank, except for I am finding 1-3 dead feeders a day tangled in it.

As for breeding fish, I would say something from the amazon region. Livebearers may be too slow for the RTC. I have found guppies to hide in the corner of tanks when there are predatory fish in it.

I am not too sure on amazon area fish that can easily be bred, you could also try white clouds. They are small, and I believe that they are easy to breed, but the warmer temperatures in the RTC tank may be too much.

the feeders won't consist of his main diet..i only plan to feed feeders as a treat and to keep his predatory instincts sharp..how exactly will i breed mollies??don't they eat thier fry??i think i need one of those breeder net thingies or marbles..i have a 15gal spare tank..anyone have ideas to convert this into a feeder breeder tank??and also what fish??THANKS!!

I'm sure its possible that they eat the fry, but mine never have... They have so many I don't think it would even matter!
