is it feasible or even economical to breed fish for use as feeders? i spend about $20 a week on feeders... that is over $1000 a year!!! they don't have to be goldfish, just anything low maintenance and easy to breed that grows reasonably fast.

not really.What are you feeding?

There is a breeding colony of about 200 guppies in my musk turtle tank(45 gal). Since musk turtles are terrible hunters she can eat only 4-5 gupies per day and the number of guppies stays stable for months. The two most breeding fish specieses that I know are guppies and convicts but it's still a waste to build a feeder-breeder tank 4-5 small fish a day.

guppies do breed fast, and can sustain their numbers once the colony is established, but there is no larger sized feeder that really will be able to breed in these sorts of numbers

thanks for the input. i thought about it more and and became turned off to the idea. the set up and maintenance would be expensive and a lot of work. i would also have to wait quite a long time to grow the feeders to a decent size to feed my bass and piranha. oh well. just thought. thanks again

ive heard mollies breed like rabbits and get full sized quicker than most other feeders

I'm breeding guppies, mollies and baloon mollies. I can absolutely say guppies are fastest to breed and grow.
