I know a lot of people talk about breeding fish for profit and I know it is possible with work but im wondering if it is easy to basically offset the costs of breeding equipment and utilities by selling fish. I would like to try breeding but don't want another expense in my life. So can you make say like 50 bucks a month selling fish or at least even out with the additional costs, moderatly easily that is. I was thinking CRS, or show guppies/endlers, shell dwellers, rainbowfish, or rams/triple red cockatoos.

The biggest problem is finding a constant demand for your fish, selling out of your home. For this you have a variety of options, go talk to any fish stores around you and see if there's any fish they would be interested in consistently buying batches of. Or you could ship from your house at the buyers expense, more of a pain but if you breed, say, high quality Ebjd, you can offload them all day on aquabid and here. Or, you could try breeding a variety of fish/invertebrates and have many options to choose from

ya once you add in the complications of of shipping temperature sensitive animals it becomes more work than I would like. So best thing I should do is strive for a high quality specimen and sell high or find an uncommon species that my LFS would want and get frequent small payments or at least store credit.

You should do it more for the personal interest than the money. When you breed, there will be so many of that one type of fish. Most stores only want up to 12 or so fishes at a time. Even with that, after a while the demand will slow down. Most fishes bred by the hobbyist is smaller because of the limited space and cost to growth them out. Stores want variety and something that is of a decent size so the typical hobbyist can add them into their tanks with worrying. Breeding fishes require a lot of time. The frys need to be feed at least twice or three times a day. That means you can not go on vacation or take off even a day to do something else. It's better to work some overtime and pay for the hobby if money is the issue. Good Luck.

or show quality koi.im trying to do the same with stick insects, and see if any one would buy them locally.

ah ic well maybe I should try something easier at first, I have had mollies and golden wonder killifish fry randomly. But it does seem like a very time intensive process with the feeding schedule for most species. Thank you for the info everyone.

You know what's not in the market?

Healthy feeder fish. Research it maybe one day you'll be the MFK's feeder fish vendor.
