I was wondering what is another easy to breed fish other then the Convict. I have a divided 55 gallon with 1 pair of breeding convicts with fry. I would like to put something diffrent that breeds easily on the other side. Guppies will not work because they would be able to go around the divider. The fry will be used as feeders for my Piranha if that matters.

mollies or platys? Fry are pretty small, you going to grow out before you feed them too. It may not be worth it. I'd feed other foods other than live foods to your p's (maybe you do?)

Are they pretty easy to breed? I like how easy it is to breed the Convicts, I just basically feed them a few times a day and the parents do the rest.

I don't feed them live foods to often, more of a treat. I feed them cichlid pellets and white fish fillets daily with an occasional crawfish or cup of live brine shrimp. I was thinking that if I tank raised the fry I wouldn't have to worry about diseases. I don't feed them goldfish or koi because I have heard that they are bad for them. I figured I have the extra tank space and it would be pretty cheap to grow out my own (safe) feeders.

Yes it matters when you list the state you live in. In the future, call them P's. Ask a moderator to edit it for you.

Yeah, I know...it sucks living in paradise.

I never had much problem breeding them a lot, especially the mollies, would always be getting fry...

Oh yeah, I mean to add that livebearers have to be the easiest to breed because you can buy them already pregnant if you know what to look for. Swordtails, plattys, and guppies all get the typical black spot when pregnant (the fry's eyes being visible through the mothers abdomen). Molly's do not get a dark spot but you can tell which ones are pregnant by how fat their stomachs are. There is a "fat belly" molly strain and I have no idea how to tell which are pregnant. I do not mess with them because of it.

If you are looking for nice looking fish until feeding time, consider the Pineapple Swordtails. They are my favorite of all livebearers and can often be found already pregnant.

For repeat pregnancies, I have found molly's are the horniest and waste no time in mating again. Although most livebearers will store unused sperm and self fertilize if another male is not available.

I get an average of 80-150 fry from every convict spawn..Knowing that Mollies are livebearers, I'm guessing the number of fry is much lower at birth....What's the average Mollie-sized spawn????
