The most reliable way is to vent the fish in question. Try to post some pics of the fish here so we can help you out. The first two pics (one is a trimac the other is a Fh) are of female's with their tubes dropped. The last is of a larger male tex ready to breed. Males have a vent tube that is shaped like a "V". Females have a more blunted tube ("U" shaped). Although not 100% accurate, many females in older lines have the "trimac spot" located on the dorsal fin. Males usually lack the blotch (like a texas male or pure trimac male). Newer lines of males with the 2X flowers can also have the spots on the dorsal fin so it is best to vent. Or just wait to see if one lays eggs.:D
