breeding for profit

Hey guys, like many other people on this site, sometimes its hard for me to keep up with the cash it takes to stay in this hobby. I'd like to know what would be the best thing to breed for profit to help support my hobby, thanks.

I was thinking maybe some hybrid or something but idk, and if I did some type of cichlid, im not sure what i would do with 1000+ babies every month.

It would be pretty tough to get started but what you need to do is see what kind of tanks and their sizes now and then figure out what fish is not a common fish that you can find in 90 % of the LFS's like convicts I bred them a few years ago and at first I was able to sell the first hatch but in no time I couldn't find people to give them too , and though I do not have a problem with hybrids I know from experience you would have a hard time getting rid of the fry, tell us your tank sizes though and we can better help you pick a species of fish

But the overhead of getting a large enough tank and and the time invloved in finding a compatible pair may delay turning a profit.

You will make very little money breeding convicts, there is more money under your couch cushions.
 
I started to breed convicts for feeders. If you have monster fish, convicts are good eating--lol. I still have a breeder pair but my wife won't let me feed off the fry anymore. She said " Nooo thier cute!!!". So now I have a tank full of cons...:ROFL::ROFL:

hmm, you could try something that looks wierd like dragon gobies(brackish but might work) i paid $20 for my first one a few years back and now the seem to be more exspensive. also some of the fish from the congo might be good, like elephant noses if you can figure out how to breed them that is. i wouldnt do cichlids, but there is plenty of opportunity. if you realy want to breed cichlids try madagascans and victorians.
 
Discus...they have had a strong market and relatively stable prices since I started keeping fish 25 years ago. Breeding pairs will cost a fair amount but will pay themselves off with a couple of spawns. Just don't tell anybody how easiy they actually can be to keep and breed :lipsseale
 
I have been told Discus are the way to go as well.
Selling breeding pairs will obviously get you more as well.
when you I have Discuss go for 40.00$ or more.
And at full grown with nice coloring for 250$.
You could always try Stingrays as well...not sure how easy they are to breed but judging from their price and how "different" they are I'm sure there is a market for it!
 
In my area you regularly see on Craigslist guys selling Flowerhorns and convicts that they breed. Also another guy sells Cherry Shrimp $1 for each. Some even sell plants.
