First off, you need patience. It will take years to raise a group from fry to breeders.

I'll start by talking about my breeding group. I bought a non breeding trio from the LFS. One male, one female and one unknown.

How do you know if you have a female? The easiest way to tell is by watching them like you would any other female cichlid. The females will eventually get a swollen belly a day or two before breeding. To some people it looks like bloat. Most folks notice a dropped tube, I've only seen it on my males. Either way, even if she never holds or even tries to spawn, you can bet that it's a female. Never get rid of her!

The Alpha male was about 8-9 inches when I got group. He spent most of his time chasing the sub adult ??males?? around the first few months. By accident I happened to come across a much larger male (~11inches) and figured I'd give him a try. I removed the other male and placed the big guy in there. Not even a month later she was holding.

I have aggronite sugar sized sand as my substrate and I forgot to turn the overflow pump back on the day they spawned, what a lucky mistake.

When the first male was in there added wal-mart table salt without iodine and they made a huge change for the better. Their appetite grew and they weren't as shy either.

more to come............... got to go to bed.

With the female in a holding tank the unknown front was being picked on by the large male. I'm guessing now it's a male since it has never had a belly of eggs. PS this front is larger than the female that was holding.

I striped the female and she gave me 11 nice looking fry, the others either didn't make it or are slightly imperfect. She is now and has been in the main tank for 4 weeks now without breeding. I might need to add the unsexed front (most likely a male) to the main tank to give the alpha male some competition.

I'll need to ckeck the salt level as it might be lower than it should be.

That's all for now.

I just wanted to add, There is an apha male 11 inches, female ~4-5 inches, an unsexed (guessing it's a male) ~6 inches and several sub adults in a 90 gallon without hiding spots. The original male was sold.

Very informative , i have a pair about 4 in for the one i beleive is a male and the other is 3 in , got pics of ure set up? any more tips?
temp?
water flow?
anything else u think can help.

The temp was high so I placed a frozen jug (gallon) of water in the tank, did this 3-4 times for 2 weeks. Added table salt again, removed a tropheus from the tank. Once again I turned the sump off and it worked for me.

I'm guessing a few things need to happen, here is my list.

Temp can't be high
Alpha male needs competition
Salt may be needed
Remove fast/aggressive fish
Low water flow

If anything else comes to mind, I'll let you know.

Pic? Never though to take pics of my tank... I'll have to remove the clay pots, and new tank mates to replicate their breeding conditions.

thx man .

Tank shot as requested. This is not the setup for breeding the clay pots would not be there, and none fronts wouldn't be there either.

One thing that helped them breed. I had 7 pieces of 6" x 6" tiles together with nothing on it.

so the breeding set up for u would be bare tank with tile? and btw thx for the pics.

Interesting that there would be no hiding places. i have several mobas and have females, different ones, at some point held eggs. eventually it disappeared. may tank has a pile of rocks in the middle but the female was just getting harassed. figured that is the reason they dont hold as long.

It's amazing how many details there are to recall... I'm not sure if I mentioned this but, I let her hold for 5 days with no food for anyone. Then I moved her to a 20 by herself. The first time I striped her and left her there a few weeks to strengthen her up. The fry were kept in the same tank in the breeding net.

The last time I placed some coral branches in the 20 and she spit them out herself. I put her back in the main tank because it looked like she was ready to lay more eggs.

If she's holding in a few days, I won't let her hold past 5 days. I'll have to try my luck with an egg tumbler. Who knows, it many not even happen.
