I googled and couldnt find much about breeding alligator gar. I've had a sort of dream the last few years to build a gigantic pond to breed them in. Wikipedia states that:

"Spawning occurs in May-Aug, when the fish deposit their eggs in shallow water. The female swims up stream with an escourt of 2 or more males."

I assume that gar farming is going on, anyone have information?

I did find this interesting news from Indonesia that a near 2' alligator gar was roaming the streets of Jakarta after a flood in Feb 07 (this past month)

Id grab a trash bag so fast and snatch that guy up like no other.

gars have been stocked in various parts of india and southeast asia for gamefishing...obviously not a good choice of introductions, but what can you do?
gars are being farmed in various parts of the world, and in most cases they are stripped to produce young, or hormones are used to induce spawning.

as for breeding specifically alligator gars, it would take quite a while to do this with individuals you raise up on your own, the females take around 11 years to reach maturity!

smaller species, like the spotted or Florida gars are better candidates are they mature earlier (around 3 years for males, around 5 years for females).--
