Breeding GATF/Payara in captivity?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've never heard of this before and even if it is possible I highly doubt it would happen in captivity in general, let alone a 400-600 gallon tank. Each fish can easily gorw 2 1/2 -3 ft in length and would require a massive tank or a pond. Not trying to criticize you or anything I just don't want you to be stuck with huge fish that you cant get rid of.

400-600 would be my minimum tank for the moderate sized tigerfish species to survive, let alone breed. (vittatus etc) I personally don't think any hobbyist aquarium is suitable for goliath tiger fish due to their pelagic nature and adult size. Payara are in a similar bind for me. massive fish + very active lifestyle = difficult to house properly. If you can keep them for to near their adult size that alone is a major accomplishment. it would probably be easier to breed datnoids in captivity then these beasts

4-600 is close to minimum size for a solo species set up.

There is a myth that VATF was bred on WW's years ago (so I read).

I would guess a Pond is the better route for these guys IF breeding is the reason for keeping. Anything is possible but I think you would need to play Marvin ***e 24/7 to have a chance Lol.
