I've got 13 2-3" Geophagus Tapajos and I was wondering how to breed them, I've never successfully bred any fish so I'm not knowledgable when it comes to breeding. I know they won't be ready to breed until they get a bit bigger but I still want to learn how to breed them in advance. Let me know what you guys think.

they'll pair off when they're ready - 5 inches or so, maybe 9 months or even younger. Give them a flat place to lay eggs, a rock or something. Mine laid eggs on my background which is vertical. Clean water is always good, not just for breeding.

Unfortunately somebody ate the eggs mine just laid. I have 10 and 1 breeding pair have formed so far....

Alright thanks, But am I supposed to separate the pair from the rest of the Geos? And wow, Hopefully I'll get 2 or more pairs...

If you wanna keep the fry you should. Once they pair up it will be obvious. My 2 largest paired off and i expect more will when they get bigger.

I think you'd get several pairs.

My pair lost their eggs overnight so I don't know who the culprit was. I have more than just geos in the tank. During the day they guarded the eggs with a vengeance. The male geo pushed a ray away from the area with his face. it happened too fast to get a video but it was funny.

The Geophagus altifrons group (which includes tapajaros) are bi-parental mouthbrooders.
When mine spawned, a number of times in a community the pair lost or ate eggs/fry because of the commotion. After I separated the mated pair, they shared mouthbrooding eggs and young until the fry were just under 1 inch, and I ended up with 25-30 healthy fry each spawn. They would spit the fry back and forth so one or the other could eat when I fed, they would also chew up food, and spit small clouds to the fry.
You will be able to tell they are carrying by the dropped jaw look.
Similar to this Gymnogeophagus mother.
