I have a trio of giant red tail gouramis and I would like to know what size of tank I will need to get them to breed. They are in a 200 gallon 4x4 tank now should it be bigger. There floating plastic plants and 5 gallon pail lid ring floating on the water. The tank is filtered by a sump and overflow. Any help will be appreciated.

Welcome to MFK Bill!

I have one RTG and I love it. I hope you can get yours to breed, maybe a pond or something huge? If they breed like other gouramis then they will make a bubble nest and they will need lots of floating plants. Go with duckweed or something? Just speculating, most likely someone on here will give you better info.

Good luck!

That tank is not going to be big enough for 3 mature GG's. Your going to need atleast a 500gal to comfortably house 3 of them. I have a 27" mature male GG in a 240 and its not enough, He has alil trouble turning around in it. I plan on upgrading to a 300 to house my beast..If you do succeed in breeding them i am willing to buy a female from you. Your going to have to take the female out if she lays eggs(needing another big tank). The male will become very aggressive to her while the eggs are in the nest..(which he will place there after she lays them).
this might help you a bit..

A freind is willing to help us build a wooden tank that would be 4x8 and hold 997 gallons of water what else will I have to do to encourage these fish to breed. Is a trio a good or bad idea. I believe these fish grow to about 22 or more inches mine about 13 to 18 inches now are they large enough to breed now.
