ok i have a male grammode and i am going to get a female one. My question is what tank is better to breed them with a divider, i am either going to use a 40 breeder or a standard 55 which one should i use to breed these guys.

Either tank will be fine IMO, but obviously the 55 would be better due to the extra length.

I'd go with the 55g.

Every time I've tried to grow out these guys to get a pair...I end up with a single big male. They turn homicidal about the 3.5-4" mark.

Will it be a complete divider or allow the female to swim back and forth?

i am not sure , which way would be better

The incomplete divider would be best.IMO

I started off with 4 grammodes, and 4 amarillo fry in a 75 gallon. I got down to 2 grammodes, one male/ one female around 3" +/- so I thought I had a compatible pair. I pulled the 4 amarillos out and put them into another tank to give the grammodes their own 75 gal luxury pad, and the first night the male killed the female. Needless to say, that greedy male grammodes got his neighbors back the next day and he was not happy! I suppose some tough dithers is a good idea to help distract the male unless you do go with the divider...

Yeah i bought a trio of grammodes from Rapps and my male killed both of the females. He is in with my RD that keeps him in check. But to get back to the topic, i would go with the 55g and a strong divider. That male is going to be tough on the new female.

tough dither like what

40 breeder. It has breeder in the name for a reason. Square footage is 648 square inches vs. 576 for the 55 standard, so there is actually more area for the female to hide, but I'd use an incomplete divider too.

I'd go with the complete divider method...at least initially.

Some fish will breed through an eggcrate divider...others won't. But a full divider keeps the female safest (except when the male jumps it and kills her as happended with my pair of istlanum :( )
