Alright the title should already kinda give away that I'm very new to fish keeping. But Ive been nopticing for awhile that my female guppy is very pregnant, (she looks like she about to pop right now lol)and i wanted to know what would be some signs that shes ready to give birth? I have a separate tank set up right now, basically a half full ten gallon that I wanted to put her in so she could birth all the fry and then throw her back in with the other guppies and goldfish. I honestly have no idea how to really go about this but that was the only idea that came to mind. Thanks for the help!

Put her int he 10 gallon and give plenty of space for the fry to hide. She should drop them as soon as she feels that she is safe to do so.

Get a breeder, put it into the tank, leave the female in there until she drops the babies than she wont eat them. Wait until the guppies are around 0.75" to go in with the adults. It is very easy to breed them, get a male, 2-3 females and wait a month and you will have babies. They are NOT good parents so you must keep the babies separate from the adults if you wish for the babies to live. They make good feeders for big adult fish or even smaller predators.

Yah that was kind of my original plan to get a nice healthy stock of feeders going and then look into some bigger fish. I'm just trying to really learn as much as i can right now so I dont screw up on a giant scale....

Bare bottom tank, water sprite, sponge filter and a few corydoras catfish or some snails as cleanup crew make a good guppy tank. The advantage of snails is that some of our cichlids will eat them. The breeding traps sold are more to take our money than to actually work. You can make one out of plastic canvas that works better than the commercial ones, but most of the fry will be safe if there is watersprite floating at the top and a little watersprite or Java moss at the bottom since the fry sink right after being born then make a run for the surface. They need cover in both locations to make it.

its not hard at all if nothing gonna eat them. use regular flake food, grind it up really fine they will eat that.

i would not encourage you to keep birthing them they will take over your tank. i started with 2 ended up with over 50 4 months later

alright, was kind of a one time thing im thinking, depending on how difficult it is to raise the babies, if i get a ton, theyll make great feeders for when i get bichirs lol

the filter i have in right now is a whisper bio bag filter, is it necessary to get the sponge filter or will i end up scraping babies off the bag if i dont :/

you need to cover the intake on the filter with sponge so it doesnt suck up the babies. And as for the mom instead of a round oval look to her body she will have the edges of her stomach more squared off, also the gravid spot wil get much much darker and closer to her anal fin, she will also usually not eat the day she is going to pop and hide alot. I dont recomend changing her from tank to tank all the time (some might disagree) but i think it will stress her out. Just get a breeder box the ones with the V shaped divider, and when your absolutly sure she is close )not days before) then stick her in she pops out the babies and you can let her go free again. she cant eat the babies in that box. then u can remove the divider raise the babies a bit in it and then move them to another grow out tank. As food for the babies i reommend very finely ground flake food or i you can find a fry specialty food that would be great too. For rapid fry groth i recommend anything that contains egg in it or u can make ur own at home :)
