i know guppies breed like crazy, but how long is their gestation period and how can you best tell if a female is reallyyy gravid?

Look for a gravid spot right behind the stomache of a female. If it's very dark and noticeable, it's likely extremely gravid. Also, check for a "squaring" off of the stomache of females. Gestation is usually about 28 days, but can range from 21 days to 40 days, depending on a couple of factors like genetics, temperature, etc.

Yeah, they have a black spot on the edge of their stomach. Don't stress them at that stage, because then, they won't give birth and may die.

thanks! very helpful

If you move them before the due date chances are they'll release the fry when they're not fully developed. Then you got dead babies around the joint.

hmmm if all the guppies are gravid... and almost ready to give birth [been hanging at the bottom alot last couple days] then why does my male still court them?

Because he wasn't done. =P Male gups will court a filter for months if he could, I'm sure.

 hahaha figures. seems like he courts them MORE now that they are gravid :screwy: typical male hahaha
