hi all

i intend to breed guppys for food for my preditory fish. i have a 22L and a 5L tank. i would keep the 2 females and one male in the 22L. when the female is pregnant i will move her into the 5L to give birth, and then take her out. when the fry are big enough not to be eaten i will place them back in the 22L with their parents. when the time is right i will take a scoop of the babies and dump them in!!!! is this a suitable way to breed them? are the tank sizes O.K?

i plan on feeding them liquid food for 2 days. microworm for a week and then progress them on to powder when ready (hopefully about a week or 2) will that grow them on to healthy adults?

thanks
Matt

Use a lot of live plants and you should have plenty of babies. Both floating and potted/planted to give the babies refuge.

thanks

i was thinking of buying a breeder and drilling holes in it so that the mother would have plenty of space and the babies would fall into the tank an the mother could not get to them. would this do?

thanks

thanks

why 5-6 females and 2 males and not just half it and get 3 females and a male? its a good idea but the 'birthing tank' is very small and if all 6 females are ready to deop their babies then they wont all fit in and ill lose some and i wont have enough room in the birthing tank to grow 6 batches of babies on at once.

thanks
Matt

Guppies are very easy to breed, what a lot of people don't realize is that raising the fry isn't as easy as making the fry. If you want this to be a winning proposition you should think it through a bit better. With the setup you've suggested you'd be able to feed maybe two predatory fish on a regular basis depending on their size. Considering it takes 3 - 4 months for a guppy to attain any decent size you're going to need more than 2 tiny tanks and 4 fish to feed your predators.

I would suggest you go with larger liverbearers over guppies. Babies grow faster and are popped out faster. Mollies, for example

thanks

don't mollies need brakish? what ppm should it be? if not should i get a trio of them or just a pair?

i will not feed my fish guppys as a staple diet, just as an occasional treat. feeding feeder fish as a staple diet is very bad for them. the guppy thing is just a side project to keep me on my toes, so to speak

thanks
Matt

Moving the females when gravid sometimes stresses them enough to kill them.A tank with lots of cover and you wont lose many, give the colony a few months head start then you can take a scoop out on a regular basis and the tank will always be full.
