I have 2 of Hollywoods EBJD's (M & F) that are fighting (power struggle) If they mated, what % would survive. Does anyone have any experience with this? I don't know how inbred the fish are. How will I know if they are pairing up? Should I move them to their own tank? What would be the minimum size? I have a spare 29 and am going to pick up a FREE tank tonight (60-70 gallons), but I would prefer to put my sons turtles in there, but the turtles are so small that they won't need it for quite some time. Thanks

none of the eggs will survive. (usually) You usually have to cross them out. (regular female w/ gene, ebjd male)

For a pair of ebjd, you'll need at least a 55 for just the pair.

i would personaly pick the nicer male, unless he ganked you and gave you to females... and introduce 2 females in a large tank.. watch them pair up and wait.... you will then have a batch of ebjd traits... u then would need to breed a trait female with the blue male thats how it goes to the best of my knowledge.... the fish are pretty...sometimes...they are very finicky very hard to breed sucessfully and are ultimatly weaker fish... its fun to see this but im not making them 1 of my projects... good luck and i might look into 1 in the future hopefuly ill be giving you a call!

Theres a guy in the missouri aquarium society that has ebjds that breed ebjds.

They survive and everything. I think its because he got them from 2 different places so they aren;t as inbred. I dunno, maybe its like blood parrots.

Heres a snippet taken from an EBJD breeder on this forum. Comes in very handy.

"Here's how to produce Adult EBJDs starting with eggs (Theoreticaly, unless you are already breeding them). For each step you can skip, you save about 12-14+ months, so the whole process takes about 3-1/2 years.

JD = Regular Jack Dempsey
BGJD = Blue Genotype (Regular Phenotype) Jack Dempsey
EBJD = Electric Blue Jack Dempsey

Step 1) EBJD X JD = 100% BGJDs

Step 2) BGJD X EBJD = 50% BGJDs and 50% EBJDs

3) note: EBJD X EBJD = 100% fatal (No fry survive, assuming any eggs hatch at all).

Bottom line is that to actually produce EBJDs, you need an EBJD to spawn with a BGJD. This is why most breeders are unwilling to sell BGJDs. If you pair one with a EBJD, you can save years of breeding, feeding and rearing time."

good thing i paid attention in geneticsat school lol.
sweet i have a blue dempsey just might have to pick up a ebjd

I have introdeced 2 reg. female Dempseys in hopes that they would pair up. It's been about 2 months, but nothing.

its harder to sex blues due to poor shape and similiar coloration.... i wouldnt fue the number thing stick with 1 blue and add a female.... in another tank due the same..... you need them to hit it off asap if your serious about breeding... you deffinatly need to find the sex out of your blues..... males are the traits u need a male blue.....find him!
