Hello Everyone,

I am planning on setting up a 750G tank over the winter, and 350G's of it will be mine to do whatever I want with it. Talking about what kind of fish I wanted to put in it, I was thinking of buying 12-15 little 1" RBP's and just let them grow and watch them school, or buying a breeding pair of RBP's and let them have babies, and watch all of that.

Suggestions?

How hard is it to breed?

Thanks all,

Christos

It is difficult to breed piranhas. Maybe you will have some luck with females and males.. Females will be much larger and aggressive by spawning... They will dominate the tank and shoal.. When I had a pregno female her tummy was huge.. I really dont know much more, but hope this helps.

only breeding pairs ive seen have been in aqariums.
but yes from what ive read the female gets crazy and huge.. kinda like in humans lol

Its really not that difficult in the right conditions. The easiest thing to do is to buy a pair that HAS mated in the past. Otherwise you need to get several and wait for them to pair up. It is very difficult to identify the sex of a red belly. They do need the right conditions to breed, and I have read doing frequent water changes (when they are ready to breed) helps simulate the rainy season in the amazon.

If your going to breed them, make sure you have another tank (30+ G) setup for the fry. You will have to take them out after a few days. There will be hundreds. If you grow out the fry, the bigger they get, the more they are going to eat each other.

There is GREAT information on piranha-fury regarding breeding.

its not that hard at all. i have had tons of eggs, i had 6 full size and would get 2 big loads of eggs every week, i have stopped doing it now because of tank space and the fry can be hard to raise at times. i have 14 large in a tank now and just leave them alone. if you want them to breed lots put cold water in the tank 20-35% 3 or so times a week as long as you have females and males , the tank is not overcrowded, and not lit up with to much light you should be fine, feed lots, keep heater on high too, thats what i did and it worked great, good luck

So when Piranhas breed they can do it every single week? And they lay eggs and how long does it take the eggs to hatch?

I'm not sure if this is accurate, unless there are multiple pairs. I could be wrong. I think it takes just a few days for the fry to become free swimming.

there is 2 option that i would do for breeding project.

1. buy proven pair of RBP that breed them in 75g...that is all you need. i had bred them before in 75g with out any problem. you have to have the right condition and envoriment to do so. piranha breed in raining season, if your area are raining do a huge water change each time it rain. keep the temps high and dont feed them much.

2. You can not sex piranha by looking at them however most likely female will be longer and bigger...and make are skitty and short body. but again its not 100% sure.
Get a serveral of adult RBP in 125g plus and have the pair find the mate itself.

mine used to do it around twice a month max,not sure about the once a week stuff.once they breed, they tend to keep breeding,so many people have said they arnt difficult to breed.but getting them to breed for the 1st time is a challenge,
