i will be starting to breed j/d's for the first time, first time breeding any fish :D
i will be putting the 4.5" female and 5" in a 30 gallon tank. From what i have read i need to turn up the heat to 78-82 degrees, give them a flat rock and maybe a flower pot.

Now i havnt bought the male yet, when i put him in the tank what should i expect? how will i know if they will breed or not, how long should i wait?

if they do breed what other fish are safe to have in the tank, how do i go about cleaning the tank?

any responses to any or all of the questions would be greatly appreciated.
thank you,
mike

I wouldn't put any other fish in. Feed a high protein diet, that helps get them ready to breed. Other than that, keep the water quality high and put sponges or filter bags on your filters to prevent the fry from being sucked up.

thanks 4 da info, any other tips? and could i keep a breeding set of convicts it there too? how will i know when i put in the male if he is interested or not?

definitely don't keep a breeding pair or any other cichlids at all in that tank...it is barely enough for the jd's

you'll know by watching them for 5 minutes
