I was given a pair of breeding Jack Dempsey's from a friend. He gave them away because they killed one of his fish, he had them in 70 gallon tall tank with a lot decorations and 6 Green Spotted Puffers, 1 Jack Dempsey (same size as pair), 2 Albino Frogs, 2 Plecos (4" and 8"), 2 Unknown Catfish (5" or so) and a couple smaller yellow African Cichlids. They seemed very crowed in there and I wonder if this is the reason they killed the other fish. They have been breeding for a couple months now and this was the first fish they ever killed. So what I'm asking is how aggressive are Jack Dempsey's when given room for breeding and can they have any tank mates? I have them in a 75 Gallon with a small Black Nasty and an Adult Convict. Everything seems fine, but they have only been in there for 24 hours.

They should be fine as long as you provide the other fish hiding places. Try to provide some barrier rockwork between half the aquarium. With breeding cichlids on fry, generally out of sight is out of mind. The barrier rockwork will break line of sight from the other fish as long as they stay on the other side of the tank.

Would love to see pics of your Black Nasty. I just got 4 juvies.

The barrier is a good idea, I am going to do that with some plants and driftwood. My Black Nasty is still pretty small, but has tons of personality. Took me a long time to get one so he/she has priority in the tank. I like the Jack Dempsey's, but would give them away if they cause problems to my Haitiensis.

yeh i would think that is fine although you might want to have a divider ready..

Got a divider ready if needed

i have a breeding pair:) first spawn last week and they wernt overly aggessive but aggressive enough to protect there eggs/spawn. every cichlid is aggressive while breeding and if the other fish have space to hide you'll be fine. btw mine were in a 120 with other ca/sa cichlids

ok sounds good.

I am considering giving them to friend that has a cycled 125. She doesn't want just 2 Jack Dempsey's, so I wanted to make sure that they would be ok. Do you think I should suggest getting the other fish first and then let her take the Jack Dempsey's when the other fish are a little established? She will be purchasing fish that are smaller then the Jacks. Probably will be some type of SA/CA cichlids. They don't seem to care about Haitiensis or Convict that they are currently living with, but that could change when they spawn.

quite alot they could be with green terrors, green texas, sajicas, convicts, nics, salvini and jags. realy any decent sized ca/sa cichlids which get past about 5-6" they can also be kept with largish barbs
