Hi.

I got a breeding JD couple in a 110l tank (with their 3 week old fry).
They have so far been excelente parents, but now they`ve started "fighting" really bad, to the extent that the female had to go into hiding....
Have removed the male to a nother tank and the female is back to here normal caring selfes....
But I`m woundering why this happend?
The male has grown a lot more than the female since I got them...could that have anything to do with it? (power balace is gone?)

Even with a compatible pair ca cichlids are hard on each other during spawning, the size difference will help, get a cave or pot that the female can fit in but the male cannot or use a divider .

I am not surprised by the aggression at all, when spawning, cichlids produce hormones that heighten aggressive tendencies to prepare them to defend the eggs and fry from predators, in the absence of those dangers, and in such a tiny tank, a male turning those aggressive tendencies against the female is quite normal.
In a nature a pair of JDs will defend a site of about 200 + gallons, so the male has plenty to do to patrol that amount of space, a 110 L (30 gall) tank is a tiny fraction of that area.
I have seen cichlid partners turn against each other in tanks 3 times that size.

Nice Jacks , congratulations on the Fry’s . As suggested you can remove the male and just let the female do its thing of taking care.
I did have a JD pair till couple of years back and I never seemed to have this issue.
How is the female doing now?
