i have my female and male jack male is about 7 the female is about 4. theres is an oscar about 8 to 9 in in there and a bluegill about 3. they already paired off ive tried adding another female and they both run her off. i dont know if the oscar might be a cause of this. they have planty of tunnels where the oscar cant fit and plent of flat rocks the temp is roughly 80 water parameters good. helpp

A few things that you can try that have worked well for me.

1. Feed large meaty meals for a few days and then don't feed them anything for the next couple.
2. Play with the temperature. Try dropping it a couple degrees for a week or so. Then, if that doesn't work, bump it up a few.
3. Sometimes water changes can trigger spawning.
4. If one of these doesn't work, try them all. Feed large meals of meaty food, do a water change with slightly cooler water, and then hold off on feeding for a couple days.

These are just some things that have worked for me. Good luck.

If they are a pair, it is normal to run another female, or male for that matter, off. A pair want an area just for themselves to breed. In fact if they are a breeding pair, the normal thing would be to try and kill off anything else that comes close, including the oscar. I have watched them breed in nature, where they defend a rock with a surface area much larger than many peoples tanks.

Which is a good thing, because it shows that that they're bond is very strong. Or at least has became stronger.

The thing to do now imo is wait. They seem to be perfectly capable of defending themselves (or else I doubt they'd even be able to pair off in the first place). Imo just give them time. In fact, leave them alone and let them do their own thing rather than forcing them. A lot of times forcing them has the opposite effect. :P Just makes it harder for them.
