Jack Dempsey's exhibit typical cichlid breeding habits. Once they form a bond, they choose a spawning site and defend it vigorously. My last pair took over about 150 of the tanks 180 gallons, and relegated the other 2 bigger fish to facing the corner. Just turning around caused them to get charged by both parents. In my experience, the thing to watch out for is that the male is often ready to spawn again before the female, especially if you remove the fry. In which case, the female must be removed or it will suffer a barrage of attacks from the male.

As far as getting them to spawn...they're relatively easy. Raise the temp to about 82 degrees and do plenty of water changes. Not as easy as Convicts, but they're at the easier end of breeding as far as cichlids go.

Here's an old pic of mine patrolling:

if the male is read and the female isnt watch out and get the female out or a real fin whipping and ripping is bound to occur
