Agree with the above, and when a pair, pairs off, don't immediately get rid of the rest. Others in the tank will help allow the pair bond to become stronger.
I will sometimes (if the tank is large enough), slip in a divider between the non-paired individuals and the pair, this allows the male to display, and vent, to focus his heightened spawning hormone aggression toward the others. Once the bond is set, you can remove the others
