I have a quick question regarding breeding Jags. I am generally use to harem fish and am somewhat unfamiliar with pairing fish. If I have a male and female, will they eventually pair up, or are the Jags selective of whom they breed with?

I ask because I was planning on growing out a few to get a pair, but someone offered to give me an adult male and female.

:nilly:You can breed jaguars fairly easily if you give them plenty of room. You need a male and a female at least five inches long. Provide some flat areas for them to spawn on. Give the female some extra cover in case she’s not quite as ready as he is. They care for the eggs and care for the fry very nicely. The parents fan the eggs. Once they hatch, they may move them to hide them from you. Start feeding the fry when they start swimming. Since they lay huge quantities of eggs (500+ and up, way up), you will need huge quantities of fry food and lots of room. I've bred them 2 times now. GOOD LUCK!!! :D

I've had a pair of Jags, didn't buy them as a male or female and they just turned out to be male and female. The female was about 4" and the male was about 5". I didn't even noticed they were breeding but I would suggest dither fish if the male is showing too much aggression on the female otherwise it will end up dead. Their first breeding hatched 60-70s or so but I didn't bother to siphon them out since I didn't want to raise them but one of them ended up eating them all a few days later.

The boyfriend and I have pair of Jags that were caught at an inch from a Miami Canal that turned out to be a male and female and they paired up and breed like bunnies. They were actually 3ish-4 inch female and 4ish-5inch male when they started breeing but the fry was lower in number then they are now. They are bigger now and still breed like crazy. I acutally found that the female tends to be just as agressive as the male if not more. We have not had any problems with them attacking eachother yet. They are also very smart!

The pictures are more recent pictures.

Wow, nice jags Ash. They look amazing.

For me I just bought a male and female from different lfs and threw them into a 60 gallon. I provided them with rocks and driftwood for them to lay eggs on. They weren't really aggro towards eachother, because they had some cichlids as dithers to keep them company. Keep them well fed and keep the temp high. They should breed fast.

I am trying to get my tank set up right now so that I can go get my new pair. I can't wait.

Sucked it up and bought a few fry since I never got the pair. 5 for $10. they've already pick up about 0.5" in the last few weeks. They're doing good so far.
