To those of you breeding Jack Dempseys:
Regardless of color morph/type, are you placing one pair in a tank alone or dividing sections with a pair in each section? I ask because I have two 75s devoted to JDs. I have 5 in one tank (largest is 5") and 9 (2-3") in another tank. They seem to huddle together without aggression but also without interest in breeding.

To those worried about my care of them, you should know the following:
I run an FX5 and large sponge filter on each tank. I change 50-75% of the water weekly. I am only growing them out until breeding begins. At that point, I will take the others back to the LFS I manage.

Are the tanks bare? If they are try adding a few terracotta pots, maybe that will create boundries for them to get territorial over / give them breeding sites to start pairing up.

Good luck with your breeding project.

Both tanks have natural gravel mix, small pieces of wood, slate and 3-4 terra cotta pots of various sizes. Don't know why they are not into pairing off. Also can't figure out why they are so easily startled.

Jack Dempsey are always giddy. Very easily startled, and relies alot on the actions of dithers. They go through several changes where their personality will change alot with their color. Once they go from the red hue to a black they become more chilled out and curious.
Your biggest fish is only 5in. Give them time. The fish is only a couple months old and they need more time than that to reach maturity and pick a partner.
