I picked up today a male Jack Dempsey cichlid. I have a 6 inch female and the male is slightly longer and quite a bit fatter. When I put the male in, within seconds the female was up rubbing on him and swimming around with him. About 30 minutes later the male seems to be more comfortable and started swimming around the tank. The female started nipping at him every now again but didn't seem very aggressive towards him (which surprised me because she usually bullies the crap out of my other fish I put in the tank.) Now they are both doing this weird waving back and forth thing kinda wipping their tails and head around then they lip lock. Does this mean they wont pair up like I had hoped or is this a precursor to breeding behavior? Please help!

okay they stopped fighting but the female is scared of the male. She is exibiting the pale "freaked out" color, and won't go near him. If he comes close then she swims away quickly. any advice?

I'll post them as soon ad I get home from vacation. I'm pretty confident its a male. I looked up a lot of pictures and read a lot on how to sex them. Males tend to have a longer dorsal fin but that isn't a very good way to do it. The best way is to look at their coloring. Males have very little color on their face and gill covers but a lot of color covering their body. Females have colorful faces and dull bodies. My new guy fit the description as a male so I'm pretty confident.
