Breeding Jewels

I got a pair of Jewel Cichlids about a week ago, and the male has been very aggressive towards the female. I'm afraid that he will end up killing her. Thought about moving him to the larger African Cichlid tank temporarily.
Do I separate the two for a bit? Anyone with breeding experience and advice?

Well, I did have some large sized Rosies in there... Emphases on did, lol. I do believe that they were killed by the male. I do have some Danios in another tank... worth another shot I guess.
