i am goona set up a 48x15x15 to breed mbuna and was wondering how many and of what sex fish i can have they'll probaly be yellow labs or maybe red zebras

i think it's usually more females than males, because the males can get aggressive if there are fewer females [i could be wrong but i'm pretty sure]

perfect breeding would be 2 males / 6 females

theres never to many females lol, its all up to you man, but with that many females you better have sufficient fry/grow out tanks lol, cause if you got everything right, your always gonna have a couple prego females

As long as you have about 3 females to every male, and I do suggest more than one male, you will have more than enough fry. So go crazy and get 2-3 males and 25 females!:D

:iagree: Well said. I have some victorian males with 10-12 females each and I get fry everywhere.

well thats what im asking whats the maximum i can have so if i can have more males i will i dont care how many fry i end up with ill sell them or give to lfs the point in me breeding is to get as many fry bas i can and then sell them to make a bit of cash

I have a similar sized tank (standard 55) with about 20 orange zebra cichlids and a few other mbuna, and they keep breedding, no matter what. At first i thought, "Great, now i can sell/trade them". However, this is not as easy as it seems, as i have only managed to get rid of 7 ADULTS, and no fry yet(my current breeders are all fry from my first, second, and third generations). The problem is that there are too many of this kind of fish in my area, and no one who wants them. Also, some of my LFS do not want to buy/trade them from me

So, point is, make sure there is a demand in your area for the fish you are trying to breed before you breed them. Also, many LFS will not pay you to take fish of you hands, and some will not even let you trade them in for other fish, so make sure you have a place to sell/trade them as well ;) good luck :)
