well scince i have mostly predatory fish/turtles, Ive found that they all have one thing in common. They all love mosquito fish. i have easy access to my ranch but sometimes it's a pain trying to catch all those little fish. Well anyways iv'e tried breeding them in the past to start a little colony but they ALWAYS eat their fry. Any advice???

well its almost impossible to separate the fry because they are barely visible. and i was gonna try having lots of places to hide on my next atempt.

I cover one wall with suction cup ivy/plants that I found in the reptile section
at the pet store. I use it in my feeder guppy tank, And it seems to work.
And cleans up easily.

Spike;)

thanks. i just got some plants yesterday so we'll see how it works out.

Buy a 10' pole of 1/2"-1" pvc. Then cut up the pieces I. 1" sections. Drop a huge pile in there and they fry should be able to escape in there. Another option is a bunch of mop handles hanging from the top of the tank/pond. Or you can add a ton of camomba and a bunch of other grassy plants. Hairgrass may work as well. You can also add a divider big enough for just the fry to pass through.

as said, you need lots of hiding places, much like guppies. but mosquito fish are better at cannibalizing fry than slow guppies.
Also, the ones I kept had very small broods compared to guppies, and were totally inconsistent about dropping them. It wasn't done at predictable intervals, and not all at the same time. That confused me. They dropped less fry, more often.
Hugely gravid females would ping out a few fry but retain the gravid spot & some belly. then drop a few more relatively soon again. no timing.
In ponds, the fry hang in shallows with thick grass & algae where adults can't go, but spook out quick.
The number of fry I got just weren't worth raising for feeders. It was easier netting them out of the ponds with a really long handled big wide net.
Some mosquito fish populations have IPs, some don't.

If you want to raise feeders, it'd be much faster with convicts.
