I came across a male and female pair for a good price, and I'm going to grab them and hopefully breed them.

They are about 8 inches each, so they are still a bit young, but, I'm wondering if any of the experienced keepers/breeders
have any tips for the project.

I have a 150 to start them off in, and I'm thinking of building a plywood tank (72x36x24), or possibly a smaller size above ground pool, like you see in department stores etc (roughly 500-1000 gallons).

Any and all help is appreciated greatly.

Thanks

Quince

P.S. I already own two hystrix rays, so I am familiar with, and aware of the basics of ray keeping. Just looking for some advice on pairing/mating/breeding.
Thanks

I would go with a bigger tank like 96"x48" so they can live in there for life this preventing you from having to upgrade again. Sounds like fun though and a good plan!

howdie fellow canadian!

Not sure if 150 is big enough to breed rays. But i always adhere to the notion here in mfk that "i'm going to upgrade" doesnt normally happen hehe.

but that's besides the point. IMO and as far as i've read, i think that in order to breed rays, u need 3 rays. 2 male, 1 female. u gotta double check with the experts coz im mainly a "casual" :)

Lol, apologies to anyone that does not like the mental image or imagination,
ok let me ask you this, if you were going to have a baby do you need to have a three some to make it happen??

Well... if I was there with 2 girls- it would happen much quicker.

He isnt entirely wrong. Best odds is 5 rays 3 female 2 male. It is possible if you only have one male to just "Not get it" by adding another male you introduce the competition and introduce the breeding behavior.
