Breeding Neons?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I got mine to breed after trying every companation under the sun at 78oF . I had tryed it all differnt water primes and heat. Til I had meet a guy on a forum ad he told the thing I was doing wrong was my temp. I uped the tamp in the tank and not 2 days after doing that it happened. 5 started seeing the egg being droped ever where. OUt of around 100 hachig I ended up with 30 or so making it.

i didnt even know people bred neons.. i just figured they were imported by the millions

Thats what they want tou to think they are actually a biological bi-product from top secret miliatary programmes aimed to make an aircraft engine that can be capable of hyperspace travel.

Hardest part of breeding neons is keeping the fry alive. Predation is enevitable on some level unless you use an elevated grid at the bottom of the tank. Craft mesh is my personal choice for keeping scattered eggs away from adults. Neon fry are quite sensitive to water conditions. They are also light sensitive so keep things on the dim side. After they hatch they require very small food like infusoria. I have heard that they will eat organic goodies off of a sponge filter when very young.

Not long ago I read that neons can live up to about 10 years (amazing!). Cardinal tetras are said to be more difficult to breed. Search the web and you will find quite a bit of info on breeding neons. Everyone has their own set of scruples so I'm afraid you'll have to make some decisions on your own as to what breeding methods best suit you.
