I have had a pair of nerites (a tiger and a zebra I believe) for several months now living in a ten gallon planted and now have recently been moved to a 12gallon dirted tank. I've recently discovered that they can live not only in brackish(which I already knew) but they can live in a completely marine environment and are reef safe.

After this discovery I was hoping to see if I could breed some in order to give my brother a cleaner crew for his 65gallon saltwater tank as he's had issues with turbo snails and I plan on starting a nano reef and hope to produce some for that as well.

However, I've heard some contradiction when it comes to breeding these snails and I'd like to hear from someone who has already done it. For example I have read they will only breed in brackish and you can only raise the young in saltwater. The brackish water bit however I'm pretty sure can be proven false as my snails (as well as other people from what I've seen) regularly destroy my drift wood with their eggs lol. Obviously none of them hatch or else I wouldn't be asking questions here lol.

But basically I'd like to know the real facts from the myth I guess. Also how other people have their setups and their processes for doing this. Thanks!

I'll try to find the article, but I read one a while back that said you need brackish water to raise the young. They will lay eggs in salt or fresh but they won't survive. Put them in a brackish tank with lots of wood and some plants and they'll go to town. I personally wouldn't mix those two types, I'd try and get another zebra and another tiger and breed both types. I'll try finding the report for you
