We have one Tiger and one Red Oscar. They are both around a year old, and where raised together. Lately they have been "locking lips", laying on the rocks together, and the Red oscar looks like she has a muscle spasm in her tail once and awhile. We think they are trying to breed, but where not sure. We can't find any eggs. Any Ideas?

I believe Oscars reach sexual maturity at two years old. They may go through pair bounding spawning rituals at 6 months. But rarely produce any eggs yet.

I have two oscars, a red tiger, and an albino. They are just now at a year old, have laid eggs 4 times. Promptly eat them, tho. So, they can and will lay eggs before 2 years old. The tail spasms you are talking about, mine does that too. And the lip locking and the red tiger, i am assuming is the male, will slap the albino in the face with his tail, and they splash water all over the place chasing each other around the tank. Every time they go through all of this, within 2 days I have hundreds of eggs laying on the bottom of the tank.
Hope that helps.

Thanks so much! My Tiger oscar is the male, and wow dose he love to splash water, I swear he would jump out of the tank at times if the top wasn't on. I was in the hopsital for a few days, our son was just born, so I have a feeing we missed the eggs. They seem more calm now.

Congratulations on your son being born. As for the oscars, they will get the hang of it soon, and won't eat the eggs. It probably will take them the next few months to get the hang of being a parent.

What is the minimum tank size requirement if someone wanted to begin breeding two Oscars? Are they easy to breed after they get past the stage where they eat their own eggs?

55g.by.themselves.minimum?

Can anyone tell me at what age generally are most Oscars full grown?

thanks

how are you sure that the Tiger oscar is a male? Did you vent the oscar? The only way you can tell the sex of an oscar is by venting, otherwise you have to wait and see if they breed.

Oscars can live well over 10 years. And I believe they max out over 12".
