So I have a few questions about breeding oscars. My fist question is at what size will a male and a female pair up? Second how do you know when they have laid eggs

they can pair up any after about 8 months as a mated pair, but any 2 oscars no mater the sex will appear as "paired up". from my appearance 13 to 18 months before spawning, and if you see eggs they have spawned or if you are lucky will catch them in the act, other wise you will not know. Also a female will lay wither a male is present or not. that means you may have what appears to be a mated pair but are really 2 females. Catching them in the act is best way to know who, is who. but if they do get fertilized and you missed it, you will at least know you have a mated pair.

also like most cichlids they will go into nesting mode, cleaning a rock, or spot, sweeping it with there bellies and chasing everything else away from the area, again this does not mean you have a male female pair. they will do this regardless if both sexes are present.

In my experience, the female breeding tube is more square and stubby, while the male breeding tube is more narrow, triangular, and pointy. After laying the eggs, the female breeding tube also is often kind of a reddish colour while the male breeding tube remains more white.
