i have 4 red belly pacu from past 1 year now i want to know that at what age do they breed and how to sex them i want to breed them i have them in my 500 gallon outdoor pond:confused::confused::confused:

Pacu get so large that I'd say they would have to be quite large before breeding too. In 500 you hardly have room for a pair to breed from what I've seen. I would look towards fellow pacu people though and see if anyone has done it yet.

No offense, but why? Pacu are overbred in my opinion, and they are an issue in many areas as an invasive species.

I know a lot of people like them in aquaria, but you don't want to get fry you can't house (500g is not near enough room for a bunch of baby pacus after they start growing up), and not to mention no one would take them because they have plenty already everywhere.

Guppy's are over bred as well, so are convicts, granted they don't become tank busters, but I think a lot of us work really hard to make out fish comfortable. All that time pefecting water quality, and providing a natural home, its neat to see them breed, especially if your attached to the fish.

I've never heard of an aquarium spawning. I've only heard of captive farm spawning.
Pacus spawn from Oct to June. Females lay from 59,000 to over 400,000 eggs. Pacus are egg scatterers and avid egg-eaters. So, if you were somehow successful in spawning them, in aquaria, you'd have to remove the adults after they're done spawning.
Pacu farms coordinate the spawn of their broodstock with introduced hormones so all females lay eggs at the same time.

after a year and some change they can breed.

The only reason I'm against breeding of pacus, is because in a 500gal pond, it would overcrowd instantly (especially at the numbers you posted). No one would want them. Just my two cents. Only solution would be using them as feeders ...

what would you do with 1200 fry that require 200 gal min, each ...

Muffywrx makes some very good points regarding your interest in breeding Pacu. Please make educated decisions when selecting ANY species to breed.

lol hows the breeding coming
