At the moment I have a divider in with my pair of zonts, trouble is I really don't like dividers male has 3 1/2 of tank space female 2 1/2 tank space, not to bad now there only 7 and 5 inch but as they get bigger,,, thinking of getting the female her own tank 100 gal 4 foot and then putting her in the 180 with the male when she's ready to spawn. Do you think it will work or will taking her out completely brake the pair bond

I would only do it if they are really not doing well with each other. But I wouldn't keep doing it. I think it would break the bond. I think you need to condition them to spawn. Part of having cichlid pairs unfortunately is using dividers. I would also split the tank down the middle if not giving the female more territory. If he is beating on her then you are just giving him more space to make his and not let her in. If you do that, I would fatten them up for a while, doing frequent WC and then after about a month, they should be set in their own territory and when you pull the divider they should see each other as new potential mates.
