I picked up a single male and a single female platy today. I think they are male and female because of the different anal fins but I'm not sure. anyways, how can I tell if the female is pregnant? How big do they have to be to breed? they are around 1" long currently. would the male breed with multiple females if i got more? thanks for the info. I have them in a 16 gallon bow front and i plan on moving the fry to a 26 gallon bow front. thanks all!

i wouldnt move the fry to such big of a tank because they will feel unsafe in such a open space. but if you have to i would make plenty of hiding spots for them.

Wouldn't a breeder net be a better solution? In my opinion one male should have several females to harass. He will do the deed with any ladies in the tank. If you really want to keep the fry get a breeder net that has a place for the female to have the babies then take her out and leave the fry to get bigger there.

I have a group of about 30 Sunset platies that been breeding for about 4 years. Started with just 4 one male 3 females. I find it best to have several females to one male. Males can be relentless on the females and its best to have several females so 1 doesn't get too tired out from being chased constantly. I have also found that my male Platy is very dominate and kills other males. I never used breeder net or any type of breeding box. I just let them all roam freely in the tank. Platy's don't eat the babies unless you starve them.
I recently gave all my Platies to a friend of mine. I have some Hi-fin Sunsets I am keeping now.
