Feeder Fish

I have been thinking about a breeding project for a couple of years now. It would be something like this.

In a 2-3000 gallon planted pond start by adding around 500-1000 feeder guppies. Once the pond has cycled add 4-6 of around 10-20 random species of fish that all need similar water conditions mostly cichlids and catfish. Also add random snails and other assorted crustaceans to make a clean up crew. All I would do would be top up and add some food once a week.

The out come would be to what you get in the way of fish over time say check the new fish every month for like 5 years. I know that there would be lots of hybrids some of them ugly some of them nice most of them will never be seen again but some will sell like crazy but I may never be able to breed them again since I wont know where thy came from.

Has any ever thought of this or done any thing like this?

I could just use substandard fish from my current breeding projects and from others I don’t see this having to cost allot of money just lots of time.

I had a convict and jack dempsey breed then their was a red devil with on off the offspring. After that I couldn't get the freaks to breed each other. Sometimes you just make sterile fish.

Could be fun,I know the big fish farms in fla sa and africa do this in ponds, one species per pond if your looking to make $$$.

I am looking more at an exparement to see what hapens if you let nature run its course. I do have my side projects to make a little money going on though.

Feeding once a week is no good to keep fish healthy, let alone keep them in breeding condition.

How dense do you want this planted tank? Are you wanting to have CO2 and HO Lighting? What fish do you want? Indoors or out? Heating?

I only plan to feed the fish once a week since I'm going to have lots of live food in the pond.

As for the plants I want to have varying plant density I plan to use plants such as crypts, jungle vals java moss java fern and around 200 potted aquatic plants.

For lighting I want to use a greenhouse with MH to augment the sun on cloudy days. I will add light CO2.

Since the average winter temp in Wainwright is around -30 as low as -50 with the wind chill the pond will be inside a heated structure. I am planning a greenhouse for coral and plant propagation both aquatic and terrestrial. I also want to run a fish breeding operation out of there to add to my LFS and import business that I am working on right now. I will be keeping the green hose at around 25 or so year round with the use on geothermal heating/cooling.

I plan to start building my project in 5 to 10 years as my business grows.

Sounds like a great idea! I did something somewhat similar... well not really .. but it was a breeding experiment and the results were great and lots of fun to watch develop. I hope you go through with this and post lots of pictures when you do!
