Some plants, maybe?

they like wood. :D and rocky caves. Anything for a sense of security. Oh, and if they lay for you, the first time, remove the eggs. They'll spawn in half the time the next round. They'll also protect the fry better. IME.

As an experiment, my cons lay eggs every 3 weeks to the day. I was pretty sure of this, then I started tracking it on a calendar. Sure enough, it's the 2nd friday of the month :D So, just for kicks, I removed the eggs on the last spawn. They spawned again in about 1 1/2 weeks and protected the eggs much better. Still ate the eggs the little bastages, but it seemed to force them to lay faster.

So I did the same with firemouths last week actually. We'll see if it has the same effect on them.

In my experience fish could care less what they have to swim around / hide in… as long as they have something to swim around / hide in…

If you have two ‘caves’ and other random objects that is enough to satisfy the fish… chose caves and random objects that make the tank attractive to you…

In my experience rocks and driftwood look the best… clay pots are cheap and convenient and don’t look too bad…

When I was a kid I used to build wild things out of Legos to create décor… be as creative or as natural as you like…

Amen. I like more of a natural look than those fake skulls, sharks, gator heads, etc.

Nothing is better than some driftwood, rocks and plants.

In my breeding room I use mostly 3 foot x 18 inch x 18 inch tanks or 3 x 2 x 18" high tanks turned end on so one end is actually the front viewing panel. All species tanks with a removeable piece of cardboard between adjacent tanks allowing some dither distraction if required. The fish tend to breed at the back and love the privacy and security this provides. Its easy to see from their behaviour when they are protecting eggs. Firemouths are shy so you need to give them security. If you dont want to turn your tanks end on then you can throw a towel over half the tank or place the tank up about shoulder height so nothing can sneak up unexpectedly on them. Place the driftwood so it allows them to totally disappear from you. Limit any noise and traffic around the tank. The male neeeds to look and appear intimidating to others to impress his female.
