Ok, So I've done my measuring and tried to figure out how I am going to do my breeding tank under my 150.

I have 38"L x 12"D x 16"H worth of space. Their is no commercially available tank out their with that dimension so I have resolved to the fact that i will be making something to go under the 150.

2 Concepts I have are to build a Breeding tank out of plywood, or out of glass. It will have a dividers in it so that I have my fry area and my breeding area all in one unit. But, I'm not sure how much room a breeding pair of convicts will need. This tanks filtration will be tied into the 150G showpieces filtration as well as have 2 Emperor 400 filters hanging on it. And a Hydor V Mini Stackable sponge filter where the fry will be. That way food particulate and what not has a place to get trapped for the fry to pick at.

So the questions are.

  1. Do you think 12" x 12" x 16" will be enough room for a breeding pair of Convicts?
  2. How much space do you think the Fry will need for growing before they are of a decent size to throw in to my Os?
  3. I have large pieces of Holey Rock in my Os tank. If I put the Fry in their when they are 1/2" - 1" how long do you think 50+ fry will last before the 2 mature Os find them all?
Any ideas or suggestions regarding this plan would be greatly appreciated. I've been documenting all my work on the 150G bowfront. Have tons of pictures and this is going to tie into the thread I will create when it's all done.

Thanks
Mike

Wow, No reply?

Can anyone answer if a 12" x 12" by 16" section of a tank would be enough room for a breeding pair of convicts?

They sell 36"L x 12"D x 18"H at Petco as 38 gallons. Anything 20 gallons + should be fine with good filtration.

I heard convicts get a spike as they mature and it could injure fish, Idk if this is true or not tbh..
It should take them about a week to find/eat all of the 50

Thank you. I found the 38 you described at Petco yesterday while I was browsing the aisles. Realized it would be cheaper to go that route then to build my own. It's only a 2" difference then what I would have made myself.

With that being said. Do you think I could put 2 dividers in the 38G, and have 2 breeding pairs and a Fry Tank? Or 3 Breeding pairs? The Bioload won't be a problem, Just trying to figure out if that would be enough room for them?

i have a 40gal with 2 breeding pair of convicts and a 90gal with 2 breeding pair of convicts and a pair of breeding firemouths. each pair minds there own business and doesnt bother eachothers fry. and everytime they get big enuff they all just merge together and i use them as feeders for my oscers and blood parrot. i handpick out the best babies to match up for new breeding pairs

Metro, So do you think I could get away with 2 breeding pair of Cons in a 38G? Mind you their will be more then enough filtration for the bio load and a Sponge filter in the corner for the fry to hide in if necessary?
